From the outside, the human element of laboratory work may not be immediately apparent. Test tubes, crisp white lab coats, microscopes and data processing spring to mind. But those working in medical professions know that the science is so much more than numbers and charts. It’s about people — the patients behind the data points.
As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in Syantra’s lab, Hailey Stelnicki fully embraces the human element of her work. And it’s easy to see why. She’s on the leading-edge of precision healthcare technology, processing patient results from Syantra DX | Breast Cancer screening blood tests. Here’s what Hailey had to say about her work, what each sample means to her and why she’s inspired stepping into the lab every morning.
Six months. But I have been a practicing MLT since 2018 working in several different disciplines and laboratory environments.
My job entails the receipt, accessioning, processing, and reporting of our breast cancer screening test. I work closely with senior staff to develop and improve our processes and make our testing procedure the best that it can be. I take samples through extraction, all the way to analysis of both commercial and research samples. I am also responsible for cleaning and maintaining the instruments and equipment involved in our procedures.
Cancer has touched everyone’s lives in one way or another…
Syantra has provided a unique opportunity to make our health care system better. Traditional screening often does not start until later in life and can cost the lives of mothers, daughters, partners, and sisters. We all know mammograms are uncomfortable, but the worst part is that 50% of women have dense breasts, and that density can cause breast cancer to be camouflaged and therefore harder to detect. We all know early detection is important in any disease, and Syantra has created a simple, effective, and fast way to support early detection. Providing a screening test in the form of a blood sample gives more people the ability to be tested.
I think Syantra said it best, “because every woman deserves to be sure.”
I think a lot of people, medical professionals especially, want to help people. It’s easy to think of each sample as one person, but that person is so many things to so many people. Early detection can save a cancer patient’s life, but also affects every person in that patient's life. Providing patients with that peace of mind, as well as being a part of a new technology is really exciting.
